Astro 201 Exercise 7

  1. What are the belts and zones in Jupiter's atmosphere? Is the Great Red Spot more like a belt or a zone?
  2. Why is Jupiter oblate?
  3. Discuss the relative geologic activity (and history) of the 4 Galilean satellites.
  4. In box 14-2, examine the orbital periods of the 4 Galilean satellites, Io through Callisto. What pattern do you find?
  5. Why are numerous impact craters found on on Ganymede and Callisto, but not on Io or Europa?
  6. Describe the structure of Saturn's rings.
  7. Compare Saturn's and Jupiter's atmospheric structures.
  8. Explain how, between its 1781 discovery by Herschel and 1845, the charted progress of Uranus's orbit seemed to disobey Newton's law of gravity, and what discovery ensued.
  9. Compare the rings that surround Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
  10. Why is it reasonable to assume that Neptune will someday be surrounded by a broad system of rings like those of Saturn today?
