Astro 201: Exercise 10: Star Basics

Exercise 10 - star basics 1. How does "parallax" work? How distant of a star has a reliable parallax (with typical ground-based accuracy of around 1/20 arcsec)? [Note that the galaxy is about 30,000 pc across.] 2. Perhaps with the aid of figure 19-7, explain why cool stars look red and hot stars look blue. 3. Draw a version of the HR diagram, taking care to label Temperature in degrees Kelvin on the bottom axis, and Luminosity on the y-axis. On the bottom axis, indicate where the OBAFGKM spectral types land. Sketch in the main sequence (make sure the sun lands in the right spot), the giants, the supergiants, and white dwarfs. Label each group of stars.
