ASTR 150 - Homework #6
Due Thursday, Nov 6
- List
the functions of a telescope. Which is the most important? Why?
- Use
the box 6.1 example of the theoretical resolution of a 10-cm optical
telescope (which works out to 1.4 arcsec) to calculate the theoretical
resolution of an infrared telescope of the same size, working at a
wavelength 5 times longer, i.e. 2.75 · 10-6 m.
- Why is
the “theoretical resolution” of a 10-meter-diameter optical telescope a
pretty useless number to know?
- Time
dilation: figure the √[ 1 – v2/c2 ] factor for
the following velocities. The first velocity is Earth’s approximately 30
km/s orbital velocity (30/300,000 = 10-4).
v = 1.0 · 10-4 · c
|
v2/c2 =
|
t´ = t ( )
|
v = 0.10 · c
|
v2/c2 =
|
t´ = t (
)
|
v = 0.50 · c
|
v2/c2 =
|
t´ = t ( )
|
v = 0.8 · c
|
v2/c2 =
|
t´ = t ( )
|
v = 0.95 · c
|
v2/c2 =
|
t´ = t ( )

- State
the principle of equivalence and give two example situations in
which it might apply.
