Astr450 Spring 2005 Assignment #5, due Wed Mar 30, 2005
Messages to Outer Space
Read the article, "The Arecibo Message of November 1974", which is
available from the instructor. Then answer the following questions:
- How many bits (or characters) were in the message? What are the
prime factors for this many bits?
- What aspect of the design the design of the message that would
indicate its 2-dimensional nature? (Hint: recall the previous
question).
- Suppose you have a message containing a string of ones and zeroes
with the following number of bits: 529. Decompose this number into its
prime factors, and suggest the dimensionality of the message contained
therein.
- Repeat the previous question for the following numbers of bits:
4087, 1009, 21889. You might find the following website helpful: http://www.rsok.com/~jrm/printprimes.html
- Why would 120 be a poor choice for the number of bits for a
2-dimensional message?
- Decode AND interpret the following message:
0000001110010000111000000
